I admit that when the My Little Scythe board game was released, I was skeptical. At the time, Scythe was one of my favorite games, and I really couldn't imagine myself replacing my legend box with this new version that seemed to be simplified for young audiences.

For now, I'm not going to switch completely, but My Little Scythe will definitely provide a similar experience with some interesting spins. I really can't believe I have been sitting for so long!

Don't over-interpret aesthetics; my little sickle might make hardcore players feel "too cute" at first. However, if I learned one thing in my gaming career, it's that appearances are deceptive. I have played games about animal villagers, flowery garden paths and bird habitats.

Let's learn more about how it is played!

In "My Little Scythe", players play different members of the animal kingdom and participate in the harvest competition. The winner who collects four trophies first will become the next rule of the Kingdom of Baume. When it's the player's turn, the player can choose from three actions:

In the process of winning four trophies, you have many ways to victory. You can get trophies in the following ways:

Although you will build friendships during the game, this is certainly not a necessary condition for winning. Maybe you just want to spread pies everywhere in the kingdom! Other players may play the role of transporter, feeding and drinking the kingdom, shining with blue light.

Don't be distracted by bright colors and cute animals, or you will leave pies on your face.

For games traditionally regarded as home games, the quality of My Little Scythe's components is surprisingly good. Stonemaier Games is no stranger to this. They consistently provide high-quality components, which are sure to attract attention.

Gems and apples are a wonderful acrylic material that enhances the gaming experience by making these resources look special. Quest tokens are thick cardboard, which is completely okay because you won’t deal with them as often as you deal with apples and gems.

The double-layer player pad is not something of my little scythe. In fact, my only real problem with these components is that the player pad feels a bit fragile compared to other things. However, since there are no buildings, recruits or upgrades to manage like in Scythe, the double player pad will be excessive and unnecessary.

The main thing everyone talks about is the miniature. Wow, these are incredible. Each animal kingdom has its own player color and two exquisitely carved miniatures representing searchers. The included drawing guide helps you distinguish between the two, which is very useful when playing single player games with Automountie. If you let this play with the kids, this could be a fun introduction to miniature paintings, and also a pleasant afternoon activity!

There is a slight (pronounced: very slight) tonal difference between the two searchers, especially for single player games. However, it is really difficult to distinguish the difference. There will definitely be more contrasts between the two.

In addition, the component gets the highest score!

My Scythe has a lot of the same tactics as the original Scythe game. Each round is a choice to perform one action, and these actions are limited to three instead of four, so you don't have much mental processing to do in your round.

Because you have many different ways to earn trophies, you can focus on whatever you want to do, or change your strategy based on the result of seeking action. If the board is full of apples and gems, it is best to focus on trophies that rely on abundant resources. In fact, most of them need apples and gems.

Being close to Portal is almost always worth it. These interdimensional doors allow you to quickly traverse various biomes to obtain resources, just like the way tunnels work in Scythe. If you want to win a pie war, they can also make it easier for you to reach other searchers.

Surprisingly, many additional features such as removing buildings, recruits, upgrades, and an action really help improve the pace of the game. My Little Scythe game can usually be completed within an hour, as I grow older, this is something I really value.

The overall look and feel of the game is very cute and suitable for young audiences. But again, don't let this stop you from playing this game-the game is for everyone!

The bright colors and simple design actually cater to the needs of the majority of gamers. These icons are easy to distinguish from each other, and the closest matches are Apple and Heart. In addition, you can also take a quick glance at the game board and deduce a lot of information about the game.

For example, I can assume that trophies are what I want to get, and it is likely to win the game. Apples and gems seem to be things I want to collect. Apples are used to making pies. The list is too numerous to mention. Simple design choices enhance the game by eliminating unnecessary abstractions and making the game more accessible.

In addition, the whimsical elements complement the relaxed nature of the game. Things like bright pink portals and magic spells put you in a fantasy world where you can send two very different messages when you receive pies from your neighbors.

So who is the target audience of "My Little Sickle"? The first impression will make you believe that it is for kids and families, maybe an introductory game into more complex games. Although this is true, I think any gamer who loves games will still find My Little Scythe on their bookshelf. Especially if you like Scythe.

The only problem with Scythe is that I have accumulated extensions and add-ons over the years, which really makes the game a bear that puts all the settings on the table. And, if I teach it to new players, I will definitely leave it to the base game, and may also insert Invaders from Afar. However, if I don’t play with players who are already familiar with the game, all the expanded content will become dusty.

My Little Scythe is like freshly baked pie. Although I want a delicious pie, I don't always want to make one myself. Mix the dough, roll it out, cook and crush, fill in the ingredients and bake. Before you can enjoy a delicious bite on the balcony, the pie needs to go through a lot of processes (Editor's note: Abram does not have a balcony).

On the contrary, My Little Scythe is like going to the cute bakery on the corner of the street and picking up pies from someone who knows how to make pies. No frills, no bells, no whistle—just undisguised, delicious, well-made, excellent flavored pies.

In addition, even if not everyone likes pies, everyone can enjoy my little sickle.

Finally, let me talk about the theme of "My Little Scythe". We are not facing dystopian Europe in the 1920s, but a whimsical world where players participate in tournaments. What players gain and gain is not popularity, but friendship. Power is not military strength, it is measured by pie.

Everything about the game is more relaxed in tone and feels a little harmless in a positive way. I can imagine children pretending and performing tasks. Their main goal is not to kill a dragon or conquer the world; they just want to collect apples and shiny things.

One of my favorite game additions is the idea of gaining friendship by gifting resources to other players. It adds an interesting dynamic that encourages a certain degree of cooperation across the table while teaching some karma.

In addition, I appreciate the fact that if your friendship drops too low, you will not even be able to win the game. This also conveys a message that as a teachable moment for children to play, you can't be mean and expect good things to happen. I really like to incorporate this information into the game to make the pie taste sweeter.

I was pleasantly surprised by my little sickle. Looking forward to a game that I will pass to my niece and nephew immediately, I was welcomed by a game I really like. Of course, I will still send it the way they do, because I know they will benefit from it.

The project originally created by designer Hoby Chou and his daughter Vienna Chou has officially become a product released by Stonemaier Games. This is pretty cool in itself.

However, let us give my little sickle an awesome seal to the nerds on earth, and give another praise to the shelf! We give it to all games that stand out on the shelves because they are worth occupying some valuable board game real estate.

If Red Rising sounds like a game you might like, you can find a copy on the Stonemaier Games website here. You can also purchase the pie in the sky expansion pack there. Or, check your friendly local game store to see if they have stock!

Disclosure: Stonemeier Games offered a copy of my scythe to nerds on earth in exchange for honest reviews.
