Ikea hack: DIYer upcycles discarded Ikea storage boxes into quirky die and chess inspired side tables

A DIYer has given two Ikea storage boxes she found on the side of the road a new lease of life with a fun and easy upcycling project.

US woman Annika transformed the boxes into side tables by making one look like a die and the other a chess board. These multifunctional items will also be used to store her games and chess pieces.

Annika shared tutorials of the DIYs on her TikTok page @blondesigns and a longer tutorial on her YouTube page.

The plain cubes were previously used as the base of Annika's temporary coffee table, but after buying an actual coffee table she needed to find another use for them.

Inspired by tiled side tables she'd seen trending online, Annika decided to use some left over tiled pieces to cover the boxes before painting the game designs on.

"For the first box I painted all of the tile white and I did about two layers of white spray paint. Then I used liquid nails to glue on the tile and started sketching some dots on the side. I ended up using the top of my coffee cup to trace these circles and then I filled them in with black house paint," she explained in the TikTok video.

Instead of going for an accurate die pattern, Annika painted the box differently so that she didn't end up with just one dot on top. She also found it hard to fit six dots with the size of the circle template she was using.

Annika then coated the paint with a clear sealant before grouting the tiles.

Next up she made the chess-inspired box, which actually functions as a chessboard Annika can play on.

Rather than go traditional for this piece, Annika wanted to make it "a fun colour" so she painted the white tiles pastel purple. Then she added the chessboard pattern with white house paint.

"This one turned out so adorable, I love it," she said.

Annika's game-inspired side tables have been popular with her followers, who have viewed her TikTok video of the dice box more than one million times.

"This is so cute! What a great idea," one person commented.

"The only DIY tiled piece of furniture I've liked so far," a follower posted.

"Some people are so talented! I could never think of this!!! You go girl!" another said of the chess piece.

While Annika didn't say which Ikea storage box was used for the project, likely because she got them second-hand, it appears as though the boxes might be from the Eket range.

The Eket cabinets with doors are 35cmx35cmx35cm and cost $45 each. These boxes have a door which opens and closes with a spring function, making it easy to open even if you glue tiles on top.
