Bringing creativity and customization to every game night, the best LEGO board games blend competition, strategy, building, and loads of fun.

In the early 2010s, LEGO developed their own board games. Much like a standard LEGO set, the board and pieces needed to be assembled with instructions before the game could even begin. Each game featured a customizable die that could alter the way the games played out. Each game often came with an alternate set of rules for those eager for a new way to play. Since the boards were made of LEGO, even they could be altered for a new game experience.

While some games featured a licensed property, most of the LEGO board games were completely original ideas or based on a previously existing theme, like the Knights Kingdom or Space Missions. LEGO designed the games with a younger audience in mind, but they were still fun for adults, especially for parents playing with their children. In the end, these creative games offer up tons of customizable fun for any LEGO enthusiast.

LEGO Robo Champ is a very simple, quick game for 2-3 players. After assembling the robot parts, players pick a robot color, roll the die, and then try to claim their parts. In order to win, players must complete their robot build, acquiring and assembling two legs, two arms, and one head to their body piece.

The LEGO parts are collected in a pile and whichever color the player rolls is the color piece they must take. For added strategy and chaos, players can steal parts from each other instead of taking them from the pile. While the game feels very basic, it delivers plenty of fun.

In LEGO Lava Dragon, players are transported to an ancient active volcano that acts as the home of a fire-breathing dragon. Two to four players are tasked with reaching the top of the mountain and summoning the dragon. Players also build the dice however they wish, randomly adding colored pieces to each side that match the participating players, as well as an orange lava piece.

If the player's color shows on a roll, they can move their knight that many spots. If they get the lava brick, the player can move one of several lava pieces on the volcano out of their way, or block opponents. LEGO Lava Dragon is a quick game perfect for simple, fast, and frantic fun.

LEGO Lunar Command launches two players into space in order to establish a base and gather a crew. Players roll the die to acquire base pieces or robot crew members, while also having the option to send UFOs to their opponent.

While LEGO Lunar Comman's two-player limitation hinders the number of simultaneous players, there's plenty of fun to be had. The UFO can remove base prices or robots, allowing a strategic UFO attack to change the tide of the battle. The ultimate goal is to launch the Lunar Rocket, which is only doable with a full base and crew.

To match the LEGO The Hobbit sets that were released, LEGO The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released as a game for two to four players. The goal was to uncover all the Hobbit holes and collect the most Dwarves. Players rolled the die and moved their character towards Hobbit Holes, where they revealed what was underneath.

If a Dwarf got revealed, players could take him. If they found a Hobbit or a breakfast picture, they had to turn over another Hobbit hole and find a match. Successful matches awarded a Dwarf. An Unexpected Journey also included variant rules that switched up the gameplay for a real adventure.

In LEGO Minotaurus, two to four players are tasked with navigating a tricky maze towards the Secret Temple. Wandering the maze is the Minotaur players can use to attack their opponents and launch them out of the maze, forcing them to start again.

By rolling the die, players can move their characters or move select wall pieces to clear their way or block their opponents. Players can set up LEGO Minotaurus' maze differently each time, adding variety to every adventure.

LEGO Orient Bazaar sends players to an exotic market to seek Far East fortunes. Players must collect as many ancient treasures of the same color in order to sell them for the highest price. Players start with three gold coins, then they spend and sell them in order to get the ancient treasures.

LEGO Orient Bazaar is a fun game of collecting, matching, and light strategy. Through die rolls, players can also open or close bazaar shops to help themselves or block other players from selling their wares. The first player to acquire 15 gold coins wins.

Harry Potter fans have been able to build LEGO sets based on the franchise for years, but LEGO Hogwarts transports two to four players inside the magical castle for a new adventure. Players are tasked with a very studious mission: to collect their homework from each class and return to the common room.

Players must navigate Hogwarts' secret passageways and shifting staircases on their quest. LEGO Hogwarts is a fun way to experience thefamous school of witchcraft and wizardry and features little microfigures of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Draco Malfoy.

LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Wizard's Chess mimics the chess game played at the end of The Chamber of Secrets book and movie. In a true LEGO twist, players build the chessboard with the magical pieces, rather than the standard chess pieces.

They can then play a standard game of chess, or embark on the epic quest of taking Ron, Hermione, and Harry through a game of Wizard's Chess with special, magical rules. The set looks excellent while being played or while being displayed on a coffee table.

LEGO created a couple of dungeon-themed Heroica board games, but LEGO Heroica: Fortann is the biggest of them and can be combined with the others for the ultimate Heroica experience. Players move through dungeons or castle rooms and encounter enemies that must be defeated with dice rolls.

The goal of LEGO Heroica: Fortann is to escape the dungeons, defeat creatures, and collect the most treasures. Like many other LEGO board games, the board itself can be re-arranged in a multitude of ways, offering a fresh gaming experience each time.

LEGO Creationary puts a LEGO spin on Pictionary. In a game of pure imagination, players must draw a card and then get the other players to guess what's on the card by assembling something from the pile of assorted LEGO bricks included in the game.

Players have limited time and pieces, so some ideas require lots of creative thinking. LEGO Creationary features three levels of difficulty for the building suggestions and can host from three to eight players. The game truly captures the LEGO franchise's creative freedom while giving it a fun board game spin.
