The Dungeons and Dragons YouTube channel just launched a D20 into outer space aboard one of Spelljammer: Adventures in Space's most iconic ships.

A D20 left the planet's atmosphere and headed out into Wildspace aboard Dungeons & Dragons: Spelljammer's most iconic spaceship to the tunes of the Spelljams album.

In celebration of the release of its latest sourcebook, the official Dungeons & Dragons YouTube account posted a video of a model ship flying into outer space. The device that did the launching was almost entirely out of view the entire time, but it gave a great angle on the action. Footage showed a 3D-printed model of a Star Moth, one of Spelljammer's iconic ships, with an orange D20 die sitting loose in the cockpit. The entire ascent into space, and tragic ending, was set to the music of the brand new Spelljams album, featuring music themed around the world and events of the setting.

The beginning of the video featured a significant amount of turbulence during launch, causing the enclosed D20 to bounce around wildly in the cockpit. Eventually, it landed on the best roll possible, a natural 20. D20s are the dice used the most in D&D for everything from attacks to effective public speaking. The higher the number, the better, so when the first roll of the voyage landed on a natural 20, things were certainly looking up. After that, the rest of the journey was smooth sailing as the Star Moth rose above the clouds and into the outer atmosphere, but tragedy struck about halfway through Spelljam's last song, "Space is a Place."

A small jolt of turbulence dislodged the fated D20, causing it to reroll into the dreaded natural 1. Immediately, the very second the 1 presented itself to the camera, everything started going wrong. The camera began wobbling erratically before the entire device started to shake and twist and spin. Soon the camera was whipping around in a dizzying circle as the song's lyrics describe some of the dangers native to space. Shortly after the vocalist sings, "The ship is sound. We'll continue," the Star Moth finally snaps off its mount, disembarking into the vastness of Wildspace forever.

Spelljammers are magical vessels designed to travel across the universe. In D&D solar systems are contained in massive crystalline spheres, and the interiors of these spheres are called Wildspace or the Sea of Night. The space between the spheres is called the Phlogiston, which is comprised of a flammable rainbow fluid and is home to strange monsters that prey on Spelljammers. They play a vital role in the space adventure sourcebooks, acting as the primary form of transportation for characters of all D&D backgrounds and classes.

Spelljammer: Adventures in Space was released on Aug. 16, 2022, and features three books: Astral Adventurer's Guide, Boo's Astral Menagerie and Light of Xaryxis.
