Many players struggle to find a D&D group, but setting goals and looking in the right places can narrow the search and help find just the right party.

Finding a Dungeons & Dragons group can be challenging, especially when a prospective player doesn’t know where (or how) to look. Although there are many forums, discords, and other online communities dedicated to finding D&D groups, finding the right fit can be tricky. Most players join several games before they find a group that ultimately fits their playstyle.

But prospective players can take the time to think deeply about what kind of D&D group would be a good fit, which can go a long way toward streamlining the search process. Some players enjoy light-hearted campaigns, with flexible rules and lots of laughs, while others enjoy the challenge of a treacherous campaign that rigidly follows the game’s rules. Some players seek out games based around a particular D&D book or style of homebrew campaign, or a world they would like to explore. Most D&D groups play live sessions, but some groups may follow a “play by post” model, in which players type out their characters’ actions, dialogue, and dice roles. D&D is an incredibly versatile game, which means finding a group can be a daunting prospect. Setting goals can help to narrow the search.

One way to find a D&D group is to look on forums. DnDBeyond, Roll20, and r/lookingforgroup all have active communities that are constantly seeking good new D&D party members. Reading and responding to compatible “players wanted” posts is a great way to find a group. While searching, prioritize longer posts that offer detailed information, as these indicate a dedicated group. Additionally, engaging with D&D focused communities is a great way to find a group. Most D&D podcasts and streams have Discord servers, which often have specified channels for those seeking D&D groups, and some Discords centered around roleplay partner searches have D&D related channels as well. Thankfully, there’s a plethora of online spaces dedicated to matching prospective D&D players with eager DMs.

Unfortunately, most D&D campaigns end early, so joining several is a good strategy. To find a long-lasting D&D group, be sure to befriend fellow players. While advertising on forums is a useful tool, many players find D&D groups simply by asking around. Express interest in joining a D&D group to friends, family, and colleagues, and gaming communities are often full of D&D players even when they're based around other games. Building relationships with fellow D&D players is a surefire way to find a D&D group, even if building those relationships is done online.

Finding a consistent, compatible D&D group can be frustrating, but it is certainly achievable! While considering groups, remember that D&D is meant to be a fun activity. If a game isn’t enjoyable, then keep searching! Finding the right Dungeons & Dragons group is a bit like dating or searching for a job. With enough persistence, patience, and luck, things will eventually fall into place.
