Review: Dungeons and Dragons Sapphire Anniversary Dice Set

Dungeons & Dragons recently celebrated its 45th anniversary, and the company launched a special sapphire anniversary dice set. The set went on the market in December in a limited number and was produced by Level Up Dice, to be precise in 1974. Packed in a special box, with some add-ons, making it one of the ultimate collector's works. However, how effective is this set as a showcase and a practical dice set? We opened the box (we must have annoyed a lot of people) and gave them a try.

First, let us discuss this packaging. This is a small white leather box, basically designed to stand out. Most players, based on what they decide to buy, get their traditional black dice pack, and then find other dice with a little sparkle and glitter. This is a statement! Equipped with silver and sign and Est. The 1974 label is at the top. As you can see, it is equipped with a white tassel cord on the front, which you can pull up to open the box.

From the inside, we have the standard dice supplements required for regular D&D games. Two D20, one D8, one D12, one D4, two D10 (single and percentile) and four D6. Except for a few, most dice use the logo as the highest number. The exception is D4, which is placed on every side, while the main D20 has custom-designed gems. They are all designed in silver, and the numbers and symbols are engraved with sapphires.

When you lift the main part of the box, a rolling tray will appear at the bottom. This is a great design and additional feature, but it is ignored in this set. The tray itself feels like a lightweight leather, with the same silver and sign on the top, placed in the middle. Equipped with a black felt bottom, it can be placed on almost any surface without sliding around. I am very happy to see this because it provides a good place to place the dice.

As for the dice themselves, to be honest, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about their use in games. Therefore, although they look and feel like heavy metal dice, they weigh and roll as if they are made of lighter materials. Over the years, I have seen many different dice sets created by Level Up Dice and displayed at the conference. These dice will not fall or feel like any of the ones I have tried before. I have polymethyl dice that are harder to hit the tray than these. Their design is deceptive, and I have to praise them because they will not damage the tray or make a heavy impact, nor will they fall off like broken glass. As for how they roll... I didn't get that good roll from the D20 with gems. I am sad to report because it allowed me to achieve some different successes in the home game. They have different results to others, and it is good to know because they are all balanced and fair. But I finally cursed that D20 because it would land on 20, just turned to the side and gave me a 2.

Some small additions to the set include a small card signed by the WotC staff as a thank you. It can also be used as the official number of the dice set you own. Prove that you own one of them and not a counterfeit, because we got #1477. A set of special silver stickers, in case you want to decorate things with reflective silver. There is also a table of adult sapphire dragons with special statistics for monsters. This is a nice little action, the D&D staff doesn't have to be included, but doing it this way makes it feel a little special.

In general, my views on Dungeons & Dragons Sapphire Anniversary Dice Set are mostly positive. As a product aimed directly at D&D fans who are passionate about this game dating back decades, this is basically the core product placed in the middle of all these books, character lists and memories. They spared no effort to create an anniversary commemorative work, which collectors hope to put on the shelf, and even shot it on special occasions. In other words... hardcore collectors may be the ones who bought this set the most, because it is marked with a price of $300. This is a suit for those who really love D&D and want to commemorate this occasion in a gorgeous way. We cannot refute, but we also admit that not many people can invest so many coins in such a scenario. If Dungeons & Dragons is your jam and you want to commemorate this occasion in the coming years, then this set is for you.
